Alan Van Hansis Returns to Soap Opera as Lucas Jones on General Hospital

In a thrilling announcement for soap opera fans, actor Alan Van Hansis is set to reprise his role as Lucas Jones on General Hospital, marking his much-anticipated return to daytime television. Van Hansis, known for his groundbreaking portrayal of Luke Snyder on As the World Turns (ATWT), will make his debut on General Hospital next week, with his first air date reportedly scheduled for Friday, October 4. However, there is a possibility that Major League Baseball postseason games could preempt the October 3 episode, potentially pushing his debut to Monday, October 7.

As a Massachusetts native, Van Hansis has garnered significant acclaim throughout his career, earning three Daytime Emmy Award nominations during his time on ATWT. His nominations include two for Outstanding Younger Actor and one for Outstanding Supporting Actor, showcasing his impressive range and talent. Additionally, he received an Emmy nomination for his role as Tom in the series Eastsiders.

Van Hansis has long been recognized as a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ storylines in daytime dramas. His portrayal of Luke Snyder, alongside Jake Silverman’s Noah Mayer, made history when the two characters shared the first same-sex male kiss in daytime television on August 17, 2007. This moment not only resonated with audiences but also paved the way for more inclusive representations in the genre. Speaking to TV Insider, Van Hansis expressed his excitement about being cast in another gay role, stating, “It feels great. I love that Lucas is not the only gay character on the show. It’s great that we’re in a place where it’s so casual, just like how it is in life.”

Lucas Jones, a legacy character on General Hospital, has a rich backstory that adds depth to his character. Born in 1989, Lucas is the biological son of Cheryl Stanbury and Julian Jerome, but he was adopted by Bobby Spencer and Tony Jones during their marriage. He came out as gay in 2005 and briefly moved away from Port Charles in 2006, only to return in 2014. Since his return, Lucas has built a successful career as a doctor and has been involved in various significant storylines, including a romantic relationship with Brad Cooper, played by Perry Shen.

The character has faced challenges, including the shocking revelation about Brad swapping their adopted newborn for another child, which led to turmoil in his life. The role of Lucas Jones was last portrayed by actor Ryan K. Stansfield, who appeared in early 2024 during a pivotal moment surrounding his mother Bobby's funeral.

As fans eagerly await Van Hansis's debut, excitement is building across social media platforms. Many are expressing their enthusiasm for his return and the potential storylines that could unfold in General Hospital. The inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters in daytime dramas continues to evolve, reflecting the diversity of real life and enriching the narrative landscape of these beloved shows.
