Today, we’re discussing a deeply emotional and eye-opening topic that has been brought to light by former General Hospital star Sarah Joy Brown. As many of you know, Sarah Joy Brown was a prominent figure on General Hospital, having played the role of Carly Spencer from 1996 to 2001. She made a notable return to the show in 2008 as Claudia Zacchara, who became entangled in a tumultuous relationship with Sonny Corinthos, portrayed by Maurice Benard. Despite their time apart on the show, Sarah and Maurice have maintained a close friendship, which led to her recent guest appearance on Maurice’s podcast, State of Mind.
During her appearance, Sarah opened up about a profoundly traumatic experience that has had a lasting effect on her life. Sarah shared that in 2016, she was raped, an event that not only shattered her world but also severely impacted her mental health. She described the assault as something that "blew up her life," leading to years of intense struggle and isolation.
Sarah's decision to discuss such a personal and painful experience was not easy. Maurice, who has his own experiences with mental health challenges, including bipolar disorder, created his podcast as a platform to discuss difficult issues and promote mental health awareness. Although Maurice assured Sarah that she didn’t have to talk about her assault, she felt compelled to share her story to highlight the urgent need for action against sexual violence, which affects both men and women at alarming rates.
Sarah recounted the harrowing details of her assault. She was at a bar in Brooklyn, New York, when a man offered her a drink. Reluctantly, she accepted. The next thing she remembered was waking up in a strange room, dressed in unfamiliar clothes. The man who had assaulted her claimed that Sarah had asked for help the previous night. Confused and disoriented, Sarah managed to call a cab to leave, but instead, she was taken to a different location. It was later confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted by a private doctor.
Following the assault, Sarah promptly filed a report with the Brooklyn division of the NYPD. However, her quest for justice faced a major setback when she discovered that the district attorney’s office had lost her case file and that the police report contained several errors, including an incorrect date. These issues made it nearly impossible for Sarah to seek justice against her attacker.
Despite these setbacks, Sarah is channeling her pain into something positive. She is working on developing an app designed to help others navigate the aftermath of sexual assault and potentially avoid the obstacles she encountered. While details about the app remain under wraps, Sarah hopes it will provide support and resources for survivors, helping them to achieve the justice she was denied.
Sarah Joy Brown’s courageous decision to share her story is a reminder of the urgent need for systemic change and support for survivors of sexual violence. Stay tuned for more updates on General Hospital and other news, and remember to come back here often for the latest spoilers and updates.
