We can all agree that Tracker season 2 couldn't live up to the high standard set by season 1, but one aspect of the newer episodes showcased why the series is so great. The CBS action drama was an instant hit when it premiered in February 2024. Its initial high ratings (the pilot garnered over 18 million viewers) were partly thanks to it following Super Bowl LVIII, which was the most-watched program in American TV history at the time. Nevertheless, Tracker season 1's success continued long after its pilot, as it was the most-watched scripted broadcast show of the 2024–2025 season.
Tracker's success was well-earned. Yes, its star power in Justin Hartley certainly compelled many to watch the TV series, but its quality content is what kept them tuned in. The action drama's unique take on the procedural formula, intriguing cases (both weekly and overarching mysteries), complex characters, and more are why season 1 was a triumph. Unfortunately, Tracker season 2 failed to replicate the show's early magic. The good news is that season 2 had a few highlights, including the introduction of an exciting character.
Chris Lee's Randy Was The Best Addition To The Tracker Season 2 Cast
Randy Freshened Up The Show
While many argued over Tracker season 2's tone shift and its disregard of the Shaw family mystery in favor of exploring the much less interesting Gina Picket storyline, Chris Lee's Randy slyly slid his way into the show and the audience's hearts. The criticisms of season 2 are quite valid, of course. However, Randy was a fantastic addition to the cast, especially after Teddi Bruin's disappointing exit from Tracker.
The Tracker cast already included many differing personalities that complement each other (and is one of the reasons why the show was so praised in the first place). Randy brings something completely new to the character roster, though. He is much quirkier than his cousin and fellow hacker, Bobby Exley, and the two nicely balance each other now that Randy is seemingly a permanent part of Colter's team. Tracker ultimately needed to fill the hole in the cast left by Robin Weigert's departure, and Randy is the perfect person to replace her character.
Tracker Season 3 Should Have Fun Playing With Randy & Bobby's Cousin Dynamic
Randy & Bobby Are A Great Duo
Since Randy filled in for Bobby during his leave of absence in Tracker season 2, we didn't get to see much of their dynamic on the show. But that will likely change in season 3. In the upcoming episodes, fans should get to learn more about Randy and Bobby's relationship, which will undoubtedly be an interesting avenue for the series to explore. The audience has already experienced a bit of the cousins at work, and from what we've seen, they're a fun duo. While Bobby is straight-faced and chill, Randy is lively and eccentric, resulting in a complementary dynamic.
TV shows with hackers usually only feature one "guy in the chair." However, Tracker now has two, and they are related and already have an amusing rapport, which is sure to make for a charming dynamic. Hopefully, Tracker season 3 will play more into Randy and Bobby's relationship, especially because Randy was one of the best parts of season 2.
