Only Murders’ Selena Gomez has message for critics

Only Murders in the Building star Selena Gomez has responded to criticism about her inability to carry children.

The actor announced that she had lupus in 2015, before undergoing a life-saving kidney transplant. After being diagnosed with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder, Gomez released the 2022 documentary My Mind & Me.

Earlier this month, Gomez opened up about the possibility of motherhood. "I haven't ever said this, but I unfortunately can't carry my own children," she told Vanity Fair.

"I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby's in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while."

The star has since defended her honesty, highlighting the importance of asking for help. "I truly believe that there is power in being vulnerable and telling people when you need help and when you want help," she said at a Women in Film event, (via Entertainment Weekly).

"That is not shameful. So yeah, I shared that I can't carry a child. Yeah, I shared that I have bipolar. F*** off! That's what my life is like."

Gomez said the reason for her openness is because she wants to be "an advocate for women". She encouraged the event attendees to be true to themselves.

"Because everybody's going through something. I don't have it all put together. I'm me, and that's all I can be," she added. "So do not ever let anyone tell you that you are not a good person, that you aren't kind, that you won't treat people with respect. 'Cause that is not lame. That is so cool of you guys."

"And that is the fact. So screw anyone who tells you you're a victim — you're a survivor, in my book."
