Selena Gomez doesn’t like to be alone when she is struggling with her mental health.
The “Calm Down” singer, 32, reflected on her coping tactics during an Instagram interview with fashion influencer Remi Bader at a Rare Beauty x Sephora event in New York City ahead of World Mental Health Day on Wednesday.
“What do you do when you’re having a bad mental health day? What’s something that you do for yourself?” the content creator, 29, asked the pop star.
Gomez shared that she will typically surround herself with people she “really” trusts — noting that “usually that’s one or two people.”
“Sometimes isolating myself when I’m not feeling great can be scary. I think all these thoughts,” she continued. “But if I’m around people that make me feel good, and make me feel like I can say anything, that always helps me.”
The “Wizards of Waverly Place” alum also turns to therapy when she is feeling low, but joked that she doesn’t want to bother her mental health professional too much.
“I don’t want to call my therapist too much, it’s like a lot,” she said.
Gomez, who is happily in love with boyfriend Benny Blanco, feels “fortunate” to have quite a few people she can turn to in times of need. She shared that her go-to supporter is her younger sister, Gracie Elliot Teefey.
“If it’s something that I just want simplified, I love talking to my sister. She’s 11 and she actually is very sweet and innocent and she makes me feel very grounded,” Gomez said.
The “Wolves” artist admitted that she is feeling “a little overwhelmed” currently, but “very grateful” to be busy with a lot of exciting work projects.
“I like to take some me-time,” she said of dealing with her career stress. “I think it’s very important where I just don’t speak to anyone and just stick with myself.”
Gomez, who has deactivated her Instagram on numerous occasions, also reflected on the “negative” side of social media and how she creates a healthy online environment for herself.
“I think it depends on how you use [social media.] I think it’s important for reasons I won’t go into, to really help people,” she explained. “Then there’s the negative side of it where you’re just getting too much of what you don’t need to see that’s not fueling your soul.”
For that reason, Gomez has learned to limit her time on the apps and use them in a healthy way when she is scrolling.
“It’s important to make sure you time it, like, I’ll take a few days off,” Gomez shared. “And then it’s also important to try to create and follow accounts that will bring in fresh content that you actually need and, I mean, I love quotes. I’m like, ‘This is what I needed to hear today.’”
The “Only Murders in the Building” actress said that “we’re in very dark times,” and encouraged her fans to reach out and seek help if they are struggling with their mental health.
“You’re definitely not alone,” she said.
Gomez, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2020, shared last month that she is in a better place now that she is being “properly medicated.”
