Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from the Chicago Fire season 13 finale, "It Had to End This Way."
Matt Casey and Sylvie Brett's replacements in Chicago Fire season 13 — Violet Mikami and Sam Carver — are going through a similar predicament they previously encountered. Like Casey and Brett, Violet and Carver might attempt a long-distance relationship following the events of the season 13 finale. However, according to showrunner Andrea Newman, the newer couple's dilemma is much more complex.
In the Chicago Fire season 13 finale, Carver told Violet he was moving to Denver. The episode still ended with the firefighter waiting outside the paramedic's apartment, though, and when she arrived, he kissed her and told her he loved her. Violet reciprocated his feelings, and now, their relationship is much more complicated than before. Following the premiere of "It Had to End This Way," ScreenRant's Rachel Foertsch discussed what the future holds for Violet and Carver after their love declaration with the showrunner. ScreenRant: There was also a very romantic moment between Violet and Carver. I know you said you're still working on season 14, but with Carver no longer being a series regular, where will that relationship go? Could he still be in the premiere?
Andrea Newman: For Violet and Carver, getting to that point—it was so bubbling under the surface and so much had gone unspoken in this last bunch of episodes, and really for a lot of this season. So there's something beautiful and fulfilling about them coming together and saying these words, but it's also dangerous because it speaks to Carver saying, "I don't know that I can heal. I don't know that I can get on the road to recovery here in this place where I spiraled to begin with."
So as much as it's this wonderful moment, it also brings up more questions than answers. We have to figure that out. They have to figure that out. Is it worth the risk to stay? Does Violet want that for him now? As much as she's in love with him, doesn't she want him to go to the place where he thinks he has the best chance of recovery?
So it's complicated, and it's much messier than the Brett-Casey, which was very simple, which is just location. This is, "Can we pull this off at all, or is this too dangerous? Are we getting too close to the fire, so to speak?" So yeah, that one has to be figured out.
What Andrea Newman's Comments Mean For Violet & Carver In Chicago Fire Season 14
Their Relationship Is In Turmoil
The reality is that, by all accounts, Jake Lockett is supposed to leave Chicago Fire after season 13. However, given what happened between his character and Violet in the finale, his exit isn't so cut and dry anymore. By taking the finale's events and Newman's comments into account, it's possible that Carver could appear in season 14. If he does, that would mean that Carver stayed in Chicago for Violet, and the two are in a happy and loving relationship (even if Carver gets demoted to a recurring role).
On the flip side, if Carver moves to Denver, there are a couple of ways his and Violet's romance can play out. They could try long-distance, or they could break up altogether. Whatever the case, Violet and Carver's relationship is in turmoil, despite their happy ending in the finale. They need to decide what's best for them and what's best for Carver's health (and the Chicago Fire producers have to figure out if they could realistically bring Lockett back as Carver in season 14).
Can Violet & Carver Stay Together If He Leaves?
If Carver leaves Chicago and moves to Denver in Chicago Fire season 14, he and Violet maintaining a well-functioning long-distance relationship feels like an unattainable goal. It didn't work for Casey and Brett, who were also madly in love. So, it stands to reason that Violet and Carver won't be able to pull off long-distance, either. If their relationship is to work, Carver has to stay in Chicago. Unfortunately, all signs point towards Carver leaving. Nevertheless, fans must wait until Chicago Fire season 14 premieres to learn his fate and what happens to his and Violet's relationship as a result.
Chicago Fire season 14 will premiere in the fall of 2025.
